Why running to fund food banks? Today the support of Food Banks is more and more essential to meet the needs of charities and the most deprived. Food Banks are a reliable partner not only to feed those in need but first of all to support the food supply chain. They have demonstrated to be able to adapt to an unprecedented and unexpected situation, playing a key role in preventing food waste for a social purpose.Fundación Telefónica has signed an agreement with the European Food Banks Federation (FEBA) and they will transfer funds on one hand to European national food banks and on the other hand to USA, Latin America and Asian Food Banks through their partnership with Feeding America and the Global Foodbanking Network. All European Food Banks are showing similar challenges such as the growing demand for food, ( + 30% on average), the loss of volunteers, and a drop in financial resource and over 90% of them are experiencing an increase in demand for emergency food assistance, resulting from an increase in the total number of people in need, especially of food.In the USA, millions of children and families face hunger and food insecurity every day. Due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, more than 50 million people may experience food insecurity in 2020, including a potential 17 million children. In other 44 countries all over the world, the Global FoodBanking Network member are working to prevent the COVID-19 health crisis from becoming a hunger crisis. Since the pandemic, millions more children and their families have relied on food banks to meet their basic food needs.
